Writing
Writing is an incredibly complex skill as it involves generating ideas, understanding a range of text structures, securing language and sentence structures and being fluent in transcription (spelling and handwriting). To enable all pupils to be skilful and successful writers, the Kite writing curriculum is therefore broken down into three main strands: transcription, language and composition.
Every writing lesson begins with a focus on transcription, to build fluency in both spelling and handwriting. In order for pupils to write effectively for a range of purposes, they need to be secure in sentence structure and language. Therefore, during ‘language’ lessons, pupils are explicitly taught and given opportunities to practise key grammatical concepts, which they can then apply to their own writing. ‘Composition’ lessons are when pupils have the opportunity to apply their understanding of text and sentence structure as well as their own creativity to an extended piece of writing. The composition process involves carefully exploring and learning a specific text structure, identifying the intended purpose/audience, carefully planning their ideas, as well as redrafting and editing their work. In Reception and year 1, the focus is on internalising a model text and then innovating or making small changes to this; this prepares the pupils to write with more independence as they move into year 2 and KS2.
