Mathematics

The Kite mathematics curriculum is taught using a true approach to mastery, meaning that all pupils can and will succeed. The learning is taught in small steps, with adequate time given for clear and explicit teacher modelling, followed by thorough practice before pupils move on to apply the knowledge independently. Along with a focus on repeated practice, pupils are exposed to a variety of problems to deepen their understanding of any given concept and are given opportunities and encouraged to explain their reasoning. In each lesson, pupils begin by learning the new concept which they later have the opportunity to transfer and apply in a different context. Teachers systematically and forensically check for understanding at each step of the way, to ensure any misconceptions are immediately addressed. Following each lesson, teachers hold a same-day keep-up intervention, allowing more time to practise the concept for any pupils requiring additional support in that one lesson; this ensures that all pupils are successful.
