Reading
Reading is a gateway to knowledge and therefore sits at the heart of the Kite curriculum. In order to become skilled readers, pupils need to secure not only word recognition, but also language comprehension. We prioritise not only reading mileage to ensure all pupils are developing their fluency, but also ensure that they have ample opportunities to unpick and delve into high-quality texts, considering key themes, authorial intent and word choice. Pupils do this through a carefully curated canon of texts, comprised of literature which is culturally significant as well as from a diverse range of voices, which is reviewed annually. These texts serve as a window to learning about the wider world and they allow pupils to explore key themes over the years such as ‘family’ and ‘what makes a hero’. Pupils are encouraged to build positive reading habits and develop a love of reading, which goes beyond reading lessons; every day pupils have a reading for pleasure slot, where they can read and discuss their own texts.
