At The Kite Academy Trust, our governance volunteers play a vital role in helping us achieve our mission: to work as one team, sharing our expertise so every pupil receives an excellent education and an equal opportunity to thrive and succeed in life. Our Members, Trustees and Governors make a real difference to the lives of children and young people across our communities.
What Governance Involves
Our Members, Trustees and Governors play a key role in providing strategic leadership and accountability. These roles offer critical challenge and support to leadership teams with the ultimate aim of driving up standards and improving life experiences for children.
Governance roles provide an opportunity to develop a range of both new and existing skills while expanding your professional network, either using professional expertise in a specific capacity, or working on softer skills such as team working, leadership or negotiation. As a Member, Trustee or Governor, you will gain a fascinating insight into how schools work and how the education sector is evolving.
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for volunteers from diverse backgrounds who share our belief in our Kite values of positivity, integrity, resilience, respect and aspiration and who are committed to working with us to achieve our vision for every pupil to be happy and healthy; to contribute positively to their communities and achieve academic excellence.
Almost anyone over 18 years of age can become a Member, Trustee or Governor and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds; you don’t need to be an education professional or have any particular qualifications – we are looking for someone who can offer:
- A willingness to learn
- Time for meetings, preparation and training
- The ability to think strategically and ask thoughtful questions
- Passion for improving opportunities for young people
Whether you’re seeking leadership experience or wanting to give back to your local community, governance is a powerful and rewarding way to make a valuable contribution.
Suitability and Vetting Checks
Suitability and vetting checks (including an enhanced DBS check) need to take place before you can be appointed, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education. The Kite Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

The Kite Academy Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) consisting of nine infant and primary academies for which we receive funding from the Department for Education. The Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee (not for profit) and is required by law to operate to all statutory regulations and rules within its Articles of Association which are registered at Companies House. In addition, the Trust is required to make public its accounts which are audited annually (see also Statutory Documents).
The Kite Academy Trust is governed through its Trust Board which comprises independent Trustees appointed by the Members and supported by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As per its Scheme of Delegation, the Board of Trustees delegates authority for some governance functions to local advisory bodies, known as Hub Board Committees, to support the strategic oversight of the organisation and ensure that each academy delivers the vision and values of the Trust.
Members
Members protect the charitable and educational objectives, including the ethos of the Trust. The Members are the subscribers to the Trust’s Memorandum
of Association. Their key responsibilities include appointing the Trustees and holding them to account for the successful governance of the Trust.
Trustees
The legal powers and responsibilities of the Trust are held by the Board of Trustees, who are both Charity Trustees and Corporate Directors. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with charity and company law and the Trust’s funding agreement. They are accountable to the Members of the Trust and the Secretary of State. Trustees oversee the running of the MAT and determine its strategic direction.
Governors
The Trust Board delegates responsibility for certain functions to Governors as part of Hub Board Committees as per its Scheme of Delegation. Hub Board Committees monitor key aspects of academy performance and report their findings to the Trust Board.
The Trust Board has three Committees constituted of Trustees and members of the Executive Team: Finance, Audit & Risk, Education and Pay. Monitoring undertaken by Hub Board Committees is reviewed by the Trustees to support informed, consistent and effective decision-making across the Trust.
The governance of the Trust is supported by its leadership structure which incorporates:
Executive Team
The Executive Team is comprised of the Chief Executive Officer, Deputy CEO, Chief Education Officer, Director of Operations, and Director of Finance. They are responsible to the Trust Board and ensure consistency across all academies. The Executive Team provides both support and challenge to the Academy Leadership Teams.
Education Leadership Board
The Education Leadership Board is comprised of Executive Team members, Academy Headteachers and Trust Leaders for Education. They meet regularly to consider organisational matters across the Trust. The Education Leadership Board is responsible for the consistent implementation of the strategic direction of the Trust across all academies.
Academy Leadership Team
The Academy Leadership Team is led by the Academy Headteacher working with other senior leaders. Academy Leadership Teams are accountable to the Executive Team for the delivery of an exceptional level of teaching and learning across the Trust.
